Many people who write Bookplate Ink have been using a particular Antioch design for years. One such person ordered design E, a classic and popular design combining books on a shelf and a ship in the design was created from a steel engraving originally done by Bank Gordon for the Etchcraft Company. The traditional use of bookplates, begun in the 15th century, is to identify the owner of a book. Bookplates, also known as ex libris, are usually decorative, with artwork that is meaningful to the book owner. Often they show the family coat of arms or some particular area of interest to the owner.

Mark Severin was the son of Fernand Severin (–), a poet. Described as one of the most outstanding engravers of his generation, Mark Severin specialised in fine miniature work, including postage stamps and book illustrations.
